losing weight is hard...

especially if your name is kim.

and especially if your name is kim and you like to eat chinese food once a week.

oh well, you only live once, and chinese food is tasty.  though it does make it particularly challenging to lose weight in a weight-loss competition.

besides wanting to eat chinese food every week, i've been doing ok with my eating, though apparently not ok enough because i'm not losing any weight.  however, I have been hiking almost every weekend which is increasing my time exercising quite a bit.  not to mention my 10.62 mile, 5.5 hour hike i did the other weekend.  i probably burned a gazillion calories which I guess isn't enough when you have my metabolism.

enough about me!  not sure jen is still actively participating in the competition, haven't heard too much from her lately..Darin on the other hand is still doing good!  I'm quite proud of him actually that even though he got his second cat, hes still been keeping up with his exercising. Keep it up Darin!  Soon you and I will be the same weight!

Kim's Turn

This post is a reminder that Kim is neglecting her weight loss blog....

Friday, June 17, 2011

The time has arrived!

Kim - 140.6
Darin - 162.6
Jen - on Vacation

However, Kimberly has agreed that it is only a matter of time before I hit 160 and she has given me the green light to start the process of adoptiong our second cat.  We are now awaiting the thumbs up from the Cat Shack in Trexlertown so we can meet Mario.

Now we know that sometimes these shelters can be an incredible pain especially since Neko hasn't been to a vet since '08 but we are hoping they will be pretty cooperative.  As far as names for our new buddy we are leaning towards Fabio, but other names in contention are Chooch, Oreo, and Domino.

Getting back to the weights though, after acheiving my main goal of the competition it will be a little tougher unless Jen can turn her weight direction around and make this a competition again.  I'm looking for an incentive to get to 140 now that is not cat related, any suggestions?

This Weeks weights

Darin - 163.4
Kim   - 141.4
Jen    - 132.2

Kim insisted on having a blog for this thing yet she doesn't want to actually make any blog posts...  so i told her i would disparage her for a little bit.  So i will point out that when the competition started I was 44.2 lbs heavier than her.. now I am a mere 22lbs  away... and I am quickly approaching...  Look out Kimbo, here I come.

The mid-way point!

Jen conceded that I was going to win the midway competition so this weeks weights will function as our midway point through the competition.  Halfway thru these are our results.

Darin -166.4
Kim   -140.2
Jen     -131.0

To date this is the total amount of pounds lost to this point.

Darin  - 24.2lbs
Jen     - 7.6lbs
Kim    -  6.4lbs

To date the percent of weight lost.

Darin - 12.79%
Jen    -  5.48%
Kim   - 4.37%

congratulations to everyone so far as we have all lost weight so far.  Jen has been trending in the wrong direction the pat couple of weeks while Kim has been heading in the right direction but Jen has confirmed that when she gets back from the cruise she intends on giving us a run for her money.    Again, congratulations to all our participants and here's to a strong second half of the competition.

Congrats kim!

Kimbo has lost another pound for two weeks in a row now, yay!!  And she decided to celebrate with a big plate of doritos covered in pulled pork and cheese!

Mainly because there weren't enough tortilla chips for us both to use them so she took what i jokingly suggested about using doritos instead and actually did it.  But i suppose she has earned the right to cover doritos with tasty pulled pork and cheese, the equivalent of dipping coke in heroine for kimbo.  This weeks weights..

Darin -166.4
Kim   -140.2
Jen    - seems to keep forgetting that we weigh in on Wednesday

Tubby Lumpkins

Ode to Mr Chunkers:

Mr Chunkers you are a cat
Mr Chunkers you are quite fat
Mr Chunkers has pudgy feet
Mr Chunkers lives to eat

A fat cat he may be,
but a cat full of personality is what we see,
His soft round belly has been there for a while,
but we won't hold it against him because he makes us smile.

And on that note the weights for this week.

Jen:      130.2
Darin   166.0

We're back!

And we return to our weight loss competition that continued through our vacation even if we did not weigh in.  Kimberly and I seemed to survive relatively unscathed as I managed to weigh in only 4 tenths higher than i did at our weigh in two weeks ago.  Kim bounced back up to 142.2 as she continues to yo-yo between 141 and 142 so the vacation did not seem to have any ill effects on her weight either.  This was a vacation filled with lots of lobster and butter and soups comprised entirely of cream so I am quite pleased with where we currently are.  Jen forget to weigh in today so I'll be updating the blog tomorrow with her numbers.  We are drawing very close to our mid-competition reward as that weigh in takes place on june 8th the day before Jen leaves for what will certainly be a food indulgent cruise.  I also ran 3 miles in less than 30 minutes yesterday which probably hasn't occured since highschool, averaging less than 10 minutes per mile.  Maybe for motivation I should have Kimbo post her running times on here as encouragement.  If you think we should post our running times as well please leave a comment saying so.

1 point us, no points lobster stew

Last Weigh in before Vacation

Today was our final weigh before Kim and I go on our trip to Boston and effectively negate about 1 month of dieting in about 4 days.  Darin continued his weight loss with another 1.4lbs lost while Kim was able to lose the .6lbs she gained last week to break even.  Jen had a small gain this week but it was probably a victory considering on Saturday she ate fried chicken, fries, applepies, and nearly also bought soup, cupcakes, and a chocolate peanut butter cake.  I fully expect this vacation to set me back about 3 weeks but we'll have to see.  i'm planning to have a lobster roll a day and i plan to enjoy it and then get back on the weight loss wagon when we get back.

Jen - 128
kim - 141.2
Darin  - 167.4

oh wait, this is a weight loss challenge??...

....I thought it was a weight gain challenge.  Whoops. I guess I didn't get that memo.  Oh well, at least I'm not the only one.  This week wasn't good for me or Jen.  But it was excellent for Darin!  The pounds are flying off of him now, he lost another 2.4lbs!  I'm not sure what my problem is, but I just can't seem to lose weight two weeks in a row.  I lose 1 lb then gain .5lbs.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong except I guess not eating well enough? or too much?  Not exercising enough?  I don't know, I thought I've been pretty good but I guess not.  It also doesn't help that I sit on my butt all day at work, and the only time I really get any good exercise in is after work.  It was so much easier to lose weight in college when i was not only exercising, I was walking at least 30-40 minutes a day around campus.

Darin and I have been enjoying the nice weather and have been going to the park after work and on the weekends.  Usually for at least 45 minutes at a time, and I even ran a mile straight without stopping!  Though the following day I could barely run a half mile.  What can I say, I'm not a runner!

Once the weather finally calms down and gets nice for good, I'm sure my dad and I will start up our weekly walking/hiking expeditions and hopefully that added mileage every weekend will speed up my weight loss.

Once again, good job Darin!!  To Jen and myself-better luck next week!

Darin: 168.8 (8.8 lbs away from a second cat!)

Jen: 127.8
Kim: 141.8

winners.

Its nice when all the Biggest Loser participants actually lose weight!  We all seem to be back on track and each of us lost weight.  I, of course, still came in last.  Oh well, at least I lost weight.  Darin and I both seemed to bounce back from another bad weekend.  Darin went to visit Jen in Ewing and got Firkin' Tavern takeout, and then since the Phillies game was rained out, he drove to Delaware to visit Greg and ate more unhealthy food.

I went to NYC Saturday with my mom and we had a lot of fun!  We ate a lot, but that was balanced out with a fair amount of walking.  We went to the South Street Seaport and walked around, taking in the sites, but not the museum since it was closed for renovations, even though they never disclosed that on their website.  We got a yummy lunch at a restaurant at the pier.  My mom got the lobster bisque, I got to the New England clam chowder (delicious) and we split a crab cake sandwich.  After lunch we took the subway back up to Times Square area, walked around a bit, and then saw Green Day's American Idiot broadway musical.  It was a really great show, my mom and I were both so happy we decided to go see it.  I would recommend all you go up and see it, but unfortunately this is its last week on broadway.  But because it was the last week, we got to see Billie Joe Armstrong perform!  After the play, we took a quick subway ride to Grand Central Station, and after roaming around in the rain for several minutes, finally found Baked By Melissa.  We picked out 3 mini cupcakes each to try, and went back into Grand Central to enjoy them.  There were all delicious, but the peanut butter one and the chocolate cookie dough were my favorites!  We then hopped on another subway ride to Eataly, a large italian market that Mario Batali created.  Everything you could possibly imagine that is related to italian cuisine could be found there, and more.  I was in heaven.  I spent $26 on 3 jars of sauce.  Haha but it was great and I'm excited to go back again and hopefully eat at one of the restaurants.

And now, back to the weight loss portion of the blog.  I don't know what else to say, we all lost weight!  My aerobics classes are over though, so I will have to fill my Tuesday nights with more treadmill workouts I suppose.

The weights for this week's weighin:

Darin: 171.2
Jen: 127.2
Kim: 141.2

And  now, Neko explores the outdoors...

here we go again...

I'm back to gaining weight instead of losing weight in this competition.  Getting on the scale each week definitely isn't good for my self confidence, especially when you gain the weight back you thought you lost. Oh well, I'm getting used to it.  Though, this week it seems Jen had the same problem as me, as she gained weight as well. However, the big story for this week is...Darin lost another 3lbs!  yay for Darin!!  We were both really scared about this weeks weigh-in, because once again, we were bad on the weekend.  But it didn't seem to matter for Darin!

This weekend is going to be a challenge once again.  My mom and I are planning on going to NYC Saturday.  Right now they are calling for rain, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that the forecast changes.  We may go see a broadway play, not sure what the exact plan is yet. While we are in NYC, Darin will be going to the Phillies game with Greg with tickets from Mr. Kit that Darin forgot we had (otherwise he would be going to NYC too).

Please keep your fingers crossed for good weather Saturday!

Update:
Darin 172.4
Jen    128.4
Kim  142.2

Apparently when I throw up a 3 spot kim doesn't want to post the weights.  Darin has lost 18.4 lbs, Jen has lost 10.2lbs, and Kim has lost 4.40lbs to date.  Only 12lbs away from Neko getting a sibling, and I promise to bring you with Jen when we go.

week 9!

I can't believe we've been doing this challenge for over 2 months already!  It seems like only a month has gone by since we started.  For a recap, Darin has lost a total of 15.4lbs officially putting him in the lead for percentage of weight loss, Jen has lost 10.8lbs and I've lost 4.8lbs.  Congrats to Darin and Jen!    I'm pretty pathetic still with my barely 5lb weightloss, but I'm still happy I've at least lost something.  Also I'm happy that some of my pants that were starting to get a bit tight are fitting nicely again.  As long as I continue to lose weight, even if it takes me another two months to lose 5lbs, I think I will be happy with myself :)

As you all saw from the last post, my dad and darin were able to revive the treadmill, and it seems to be working better than ever!  I think my dad missed his calling in life, he should be fixing treadmills, not refrigerators!

Once again it looks like the weekend is going to be tough for darin and i.  We will be heading to Jersey friday night, and a trip to Ewing would not be complete without a stop at the Firkin' Tavern for some tasty nachos.  It'll be worth it though.

Darin: 175.4
Jen: 127.8
Kim: 141.8 (tho yesterday i was 141.4..can we go off tuesdays weight please??)

It's Back!

The treadmill has been fixed and is alive for at least one more day.  The competition has been re-ignited.  Though we may have been setback a bit by Kim's tasty pulled pork

we're all winners!

This week was a win for all of us, Darin in particular did the best.  He lost 2.8lbs!  He is getting very close to beating Jen as far as percentage of weight-loss goes.  Here are the charts showing where we stand in the challenge: (to enlarge image just click on it)

Our weekends seem to be the worst time for us, as far as the healthiness of our food goes. Darin and I are both doing good with making sure we get our exercise in, but we tend to splurge a bit on the weekends food-wise.  This past weekend Jen came up to celebrate Darin's birthday.  The two of them went to the Lehigh Valley Zoo and drove my car through a creek while I stayed at home and ran on the treadmill.  When they were done driving my car through the wilds of Lehigh County, we went to the mall and then to the Sands Casino in Bethlehem.  There we indulged ourselves in some tasty burgers at Emeril's Burgers and More.  Darin and Jen both built their own burgers, I got the burger of the month which was the Caprese burger and was quite delicious.  The onion rings were also very tasty.  Jen also decided to balance out her unhealthy burger with an equally unhealthy but yummy bananas foster milkshake.  After dinner Jen and Darin enjoyed handing over their money to the Sands' slot machines, while I cursed at the machine for taking my money and promptly stopped after I lost a total of  $1.87.  (I could have used that money for something much more enjoyable like a Dunkin Donuts coffee! haha)  Despite losing my hard earned money to the Sands casino, all in all it was a fun night, and I look forward to going back for my birthday!

Darin:  176.6
Jen: 128.0
Kim: 142.0

*update*
We will be having a viewing for our treadmill this saturday at 10am if anyone is interested.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of the treadmill to Kim and Darin's account at People First.  Thank you!

glass half full?

I'm trying to look at the glass as half full, but its really quite difficult when the other two competitors are blowing past me in their weightloss.  Perhaps I'm not meant to lose weight?  I don't know, but at least I did lose some weight since last weeks weigh-in.  Or i could take my dad's wise words of advice, "Imagine how big you would be if you didn't exercise!"

On Saturday Darin and I did a 9mile hike with my dad at the Pinnacle.  It felt great to finally go hiking again after a long cold winter.  This was Darin's first hike with my dad and I, and he did great! We burned lots of calories and then gained it all back with a late night run to the StarLite Diner with Jamie.  whoops!

Here are some pictures:

Darin and I at the rock pile that signifies we made it to the Pinnacle!

The view from the lookout:

Can't wait to get back up there!  And don't worry Jen, when its a little warmer out, we will take you there.

a win for Kim!

I lost the most weight this week, yay for me!  I of course am still in last place for the overall competition, but I'll take whatever win I can get!

I'm quite proud of Darin and I, after a pretty food and drink heavy weekend, we both still managed to lose weight this week.  Friday was of course Darin's birthday.  We went to my cousin Andrea's house whose birthday was also Friday for a little get-together, so we were munching quite a bit.  After Andrea's we met up with some friends from college at Basin Street for beer and a last minute decision for some wings (I only had 2 or 3 out of the 10 we got).  Saturday Ziggy and Ashley came over for dinner.  The appetizer was italian bread with sundried tomato pesto spread.  Dinner was salad and lasagne, followed by lots-o-merlot.  Ziggy finally proposed to Darin too!  He is officially "Best Man" in Ziggy and Ashley's wedding.

So, after those two heavy nights, the fact we still lost weight is great.  The weights for this week's weigh-in is as follows:

Kim: 143.2
Darin:  184.6
Jen:  131.8

jazzercise

I'm finally feeling good about my diet and weightloss!  I lost another pound this week and am feeling like if I keep this up, I will continue to see results!  Actually, everyone this week was a winner!  Jen of course, is still blowing away Darin and I, but I'm convinced thats just because she gave up her twice-daily Starbucks run.  Yesterday was my first aerobics class, it was a good workout!  I definitely learned that I lack certain hand/leg coordination, especially when you are supposed to move your arms in small circles while moving your legs at the same time.  So, although I probably looked like a complete doofus to whoever might have been watching me, I still got a good workout.

This week's weigh-in:

Kim: 144.5
Darin:  185.2
Jen: 132.2

Good job everyone!  Keep up the good weight-loss!

slow but sure

Week 2 is over and i lost a pound! yay! Despite eating out Saturday and Sunday, I managed to eat well the other days and squeezed in exercise almost everyday which resulted in me losing 1.2lbs!  I think it helped that Darin and I ate out for lunch, and then ate a light dinner.  We may try to start eating our big meals on the weekend for lunch, instead of dinner, which is better for you since then you have more time in the day to work off what you ate!

Anyway, the numbers for week 2 are...

Kim: 145.8lbs
Darin: 186.4lbs
Jen:  134.4lbs

So far Jen is in the lead!  She has lost 3.03% of her bodyweight.  Good job Jen!

Also, kudos to Darin who actually went on the treadmill a few times this week!

discouraged...

so today marked the 1 week anniversary of our challenge.  and.........i'm losing.  i gained .4lbs. very discouraging, but i'm going to try to not let that get to me and continue to exercise and eat well and hopefully it will pay off in the long run.  :)

However, Darin lost weight!  So he is in the lead until we get the official statistics from Jen, who forgot to weigh in today.  We're not off to a good start...

Kim:  147lbs
Darin:  188.2lbs

I will post again tomorrow with Jen's weight.

-Kim

PS.  Kimberly has decided to do aerobics with a bunch of old lady folk from her work... (what an old fuddy duddy) i wouldn't be surprised to find out it is Jazzercise

Week 1 Recap

tomorrow marks the end of the first week of our challenge!  I know for me this past week, or I should say, these past few days, have been pretty difficult for me.  Saturday we went out for italian for Valentines Day so all those carbs certainly did not help my waistline.  Sunday was lots of picking at appetizers and more carbs (lasagne for dinner) at my moms for a scrapbooking party.  Monday we had a party at work, which is always a recipe for disaster because it is nonstop eating the whole workday.  Today i was finally able to get back to a normal eating schedule, so we'll see how much these last few days have affected me for the weigh-in tomorrow.

Also, Darin and I have started another weight-loss challenge.  If Darin loses at least 30lbs, I will allow him to get another cat.  But, it has to be an adult cat which has all of its shots, and he has to clean the litter box at least twice a week.  Oh, and if this new cat is mean to Neko in any way, he's out! (since Neko is our number 1 priority/love lol)

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

and the race begins!

Today starts Day 1 of the Kitashima Challenge!  We all weighed in this morning with our starting weights and I (Kim) started an Excel Spreadsheet to document our progress.  The winner will be determined by the percentage of weight loss by September 15.

heres where we stand today:

Darin: 190.8
Jen: 138.6
Kim: 146.6 (shhh...this is a secret, i never disclose my weight!)

It has been decided that the two losers will have to take the winner out for dinner!

I, personally, found day 1 to be a little challenging because a coworker decided to bring in buffalo chicken dip to work.  I am quite proud of myself though for not giving in and only had 1 bite! yay!

I would also like to acknowledge Jen, who finally cleaned the dust off her elipitical and used it!  double yay for jen!

Sunday, February 6, 2011

Welcome!

As we look forward to Jen's Big Day (October 15) we all decided it couldn't hurt to lose a few pounds.  So, here we are, its February 6 and we (Darin, Kim, and Jen) are about to start our weight-loss challenge.

We will each weigh-in every Wednesday, starting February 9.

Each of us can use this blog to post about our progress and any obstacles we come across.

In May we will give out a Mid-season award.

Whoever loses the most by September 15 wins!

...any ideas of what the grand prize should be??
